BELLINGHAM – Sept. 8, 2026 – Larrabee State Park is getting a total replacement of its water system to modernize its aging pipes, improve park infrastructure and reduce maintenance requirements.
Construction will close park campgrounds and day-use areas, including shelters and restrooms, from Sept. 16 through May 2027, weather dependent.
Some areas of the park will remain open through construction, including:
- Boat launch
- Cleator Road
- Chuckanut Drive
- Cove Road
- Hiline Road
- Clayton Beach
- Interurban Trail
- Lost Lake parking lot
- Lost and Fragrance Lake trail
Long-term impact
The current water system distributes water to campgrounds, buildings, facilities and day-use areas through a network of pipes from different eras. Some of the pipes may be original to the park, which was founded in 1915.
The new system will improve water service to hookup sites in the campground and to facilities, day-use areas, kitchen shelters and other parts of the park. Larrabee campers will also enjoy improved water quality.
The new pipes will be made of high-density polyethylene, a durable, lower-maintenance material. It will also create a sealed system with fewer leaks, reducing the number of maintenance emergencies that could close parts of the park on short notice. When it is complete, the project will bring the water-carrying system up to modern standards with sturdy, reliable infrastructure.
